INTRODUCTION

Problem solving skills is a necessary competency that every executive and manager needs. The art of problem solving can be learnt and cultivated. Problem solving requires two distinct types of mental skills, namely, analytical and creative. Analytical or logical thinking includes skills such as ordering, comparing, contrasting, evaluating and selecting, whereas, creative thinking is divergent thinking and generating ideas from one issue.

This workshop is designed to empower you with problem solving thinking, tools and techniques to help you solve challenging issues and situations.

At the end of this workshop, participants should be able to:

  1. Use both analytical and creative thinking in problem solving
  2. Understand the systematic process of problem solving
  3. Define the issue as a starting point for your analytical thinking for problem solving
  4. Focus on the “drivers” behind your issues in problem-solving
  5. Know how to apply specific techniques, such as brainstorming, root cause analysis, and SWOT
  6. Know how to test your proposed solutions to problems
  7. Know how to present viable solutions for solving critical problems
  8. Use creative problem solving technique
  9. Use Pareto Analysis in deciding what critical problems to address first

  • Using the 5 “Whys”

SESSION 3: IDENTIFYING THE VITAL PROBLEMS

Key Learning Areas:-

  • What is the Pareto Analysis?
  • Application of the Pareto Analysis

SESSION 4: ANALYTICAL THINKING IN PROBLEM SOLVING

Key Learning Areas:-

  • Focusing on the problem
  • Issue Diagram
  • Tentative Explanation/Speculative Answers
  • Gathering Facts
  • Conducting Analysis

Session 5: DEVELOPING THE SOLUTION TO A PROBLEM

  • Basic Concepts in Solution Development
  • Key points and myths in solution development
  • Common Landmines in Problem Solving
