5-Star Rating University
Deakin University strives to produce highly employable
graduates and research of the highest possible quality
in areas of strategic importance. In both its teaching
and research the University has forged strong links
with governments, business, industry and the professions.
"Two common benchmarks for
MBA courses are the success rate of graduates finding
work, and the size of the starting salary. Deakin is
one of only two universities rated as five-star in both
categories by the Good University Guide" (BRW Feb
2003). It was also ranked in the top 10 Australian MBAs
by the Asia Inc survey on the Best MBA School in Asia
2003.

Accreditation
Deakin's off campus coursework programmes - up to and including Masters level - are accredited by the US-based Distance Education and Training Council (DETC). Initially granted in January 2005 for five years, this accreditation is an external recognition of both Deakin's academic and administrative quality and its ongoing quality assurance processes. Australian universities are self-accrediting; however, Deakin sought external accreditation of its distance education coursework courses in order to indicate that it meets certain standards in an international context.
External educational accreditation in this context is a third party guarantee that Deakin will provide the quality of education it claims to offer, that it operates on a sound financial basis, offers approved programs of study, follows recruitment and admissions policies that meet set standards and has qualified academic staff, as well as adequate facilities and equipment.
Founded in 1926, DETC promotes sound educational standards and ethical business practices in distance education. Its Accrediting Commission, established in 1955, identifies and accredits distance education and training institutions that have attained and maintained the standards deemed necessary to operate at a high level of quality.
DETC accreditation guarantees that Deakin University provides the quality of education it claims to offer, that it operates on a sound financial basis, offers approved programs of study, follows recruitment and admissions policies that meet set standards and has qualified instructors, as well as adequate facilities and equipment.
The DETC Accrediting Commission is listed by the U.S. Department of Education as a nationally recognised accrediting agency and is a recognised member of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

Distance education at Deakin: A pioneer in distance education
Deakin University was established in 1974 by an Act of the State of Victoria, the Deakin University Act (1974). It was specifically established as a provider of distance education and the Deakin University Act (1974) includes reference to providing "the opportunity for tertiary education at the university level to all qualified persons whether within or outside Victoria by means of external studies programmes". Thus, Deakin began as a regional university focused on broadening access to education.
The hallmark of Deakin’s success over the past quarter century is innovation. The changing nature of its programs and its innovative use of technology reflect Deakin’s commitment to meet the constantly changing needs of its students. Deakin University was the first Australian university with an Internet address and was the original proposer for the establishment of ADENet. Deakin has provided free IT and email accounts for students since 1987.
An enviable reputation
Deakin has an enviable reputation for using innovative information technology to deliver courses in new and imaginative ways. In fact, the first time we won the Australian University of the Year award was for technology in education (1995-1996). Today, as Australia’s largest provider of campus education, Deakin is regarded as a leader in flexible course delivery, with more than 40% of its students studying by distance education.
Excellent support
Deakin’s support for its students – whether on or off campus is well known. Our many student services for off-campus students are designed to help you succeed and include:
- IT help desk and IT support

What does “distance education” or “off-campus” study mean?
It means studying by distance or through online learning rather than attending a campus for lectures and tutorials. A variety of methods are used to deliver courses and communicate with your lecturers and fellow students. At Deakin, these methods can include either online technologies – email, computer or phone conferencing, bulletin boards and online course materials – or print-based study guides accompanied with supporting audiovisual materials, as well as a combination of the two. Deakin is increasingly moving away from print-based distance education to the new flexible, interactive, student centred online method of learning.
Distance education is an ideal choice for people who do not live near a campus to complete a course; or for people who wish to combine study with their job, as you may choose when and where you study.
Relevant, practical courses
Deakin maintains close links with industry and professional groups ensure our courses are relevant, practical and deliver the skills in demand by industry. Many of Deakin courses have a built-in work component, which consolidates and provides relevance to students’ learning experiences while they study.
Deakin’s links with industry and the professions
Deakin University works in partnership with government, major corporations and professional associations such as BP, Coca Cola-Amatil, Coles Myer, Ford, IBM, Qantas and CPA Australia to deliver some of the most significant professional programs in Australia and internationally. Many of Deakin courses are accredited with professional associations, giving a practical relevance to your qualification. This means you graduate with a qualification that is relevant, responsive and in demand.
Research at Deakin University
Deakin University has built an enviable international reputation for fostering outstanding research programs in areas relevant to our future. The focus on current and emerging world issues and trends places Deakin at the forefront of innovative research.
Deakin has more than trebled its research funding since 1998, reflecting the University’s rapidly growing research competitiveness. The University receives extensive funding from industry, research councils, foundations, and government agencies; and is now ranked as one of the top-ranked Australian research universities in terms of the prestigious research grants received from the Australian Research Council. Further information about higher degrees by research is available from Research Services.
Deakin's locations
Deakin University has five campuses in Australia's smallest mainland state, Victoria. Victoria has a population of more than 4.5 million people from culturally diverse backgrounds. It is a place of great diversity— from the state capital of Melbourne (more than 3.5 million people) to regional centres such as Geelong and Warrnambool, the cities in which Deakin's five campuses are located.
